Toshiba launches its first Hybrid Drive for Notebooks

Shipping in 1TB and 750GB models with 8GB of NAND flash, the 2.5in hard drive combines faster solid state disk (SSD) performance with the high capacity of a hard disk drive.

Toshiba said this feature has been integrated for high performance gaming on notebooks and PCs, while keeping it lightweight for ultra-portable computing devices.

“The HDD platters provide high capacity storage and the integration of NAND flash increases the read/write speeds, enhancing the overall performance of the drive,” Toshiba said.

>Toshiba’s hybrid hard drive also uses self-learning algorithms that enable the drive to learn the user’s access patterns.

“This means that frequently used data is stored in NAND cache making it more quickly accessible to the host,” Toshiba said. “Likewise data that is used less often is moved from the NAND flash to the HDD for long term storage.”

Toshiba said this “self-learning mechanism” ensures that the hard drive continues to develop throughout its lifespan, constantly improving its performance over time.

The MQ01ABD100H (1TB) and MQ1ABD075H (750GB) models of the hybrid drive will be available from the end of September.
