Spire Hack Brings Siri to Jailbroken iOS 5 Devices
Not long ago a Siri hack brought abilities to those with iPhone4 mobile phones to access the famed feature, but it was illegal. A new hack named Spire, by well known iOS hacker chpwn (aka Grant Paul) along with Ryan Petrich, have released a new tool for installing Siri on jailbroken phones.
Spire works on any phone that is able to run the iOS 5, though a proxy server address is still required as Apple officially supports Siri requests coming from iPhone 4s devices. To use Spire jailbroke iPhone users will need to download a 100MB file, install it and they’re off!
“Spire uses a new method to obtain the files necessary for Siri, so it doesn’t have the copyright issues encountered by previous attempts. Similarly, rather than directing all traffic through a specific proxy server (and the associated privacy issues), Spire allows you to specify your own proxy server.” chpwn said on his blog.
Problems, however, do arise as users need a proxy address. Paul suggests users ask friends that currently own an iPhone4s for their authentication tokens. If that’s not possible, there might be a for-pay service (and you can bet that will get Apple involved at some point). “It’s very likely that soon we will see for-pay services online to rent you some space on a Siri proxy, attached to one of their iPhone 4S devices. I haven’t seen anything like this yet, but I’ll keep my eye out, and I would encourage anyone who is interested to set something like this up.” Paul says in a statement.
