Resident Evil 6: Zombies, Mutants, and the Transition to Action Adventure
Because of this all the puzzles are incredibly easy and do not require much thinking to solve. Ammo and health are prevalent, a factor not usually present in the survival horror genre. There was maybe only one instance I was worried about having enough ammo or health to complete a section. Melee attacks are so effective that even if you were running low on ammo you would be able to defend yourself for some time before picking up ammo and health which is frequently dropped from enemy corpses. Vehicle sections are also part of each of the games campaigns. Sometimes you get to be the gunner of a vehicle, sometimes just the driver, and other times both. These sections look a little rushed and could be polished up a bit, but do add a fun variation to the regular gameplay.
Co-Op with a friend is heavily encouraged and makes the game pretty fun if you can get a friend to play as a sexy female partner or loyal solider. If you can’t find a friend locally there is a feature that allows any person connected to the internet to join your game. Overall the story is kind of cheesy and nonsensical but that is kind of what we have come to expect from Japanese developers. Many times I found myself angry at the games characters for acting really stupid and immature in very obviously serious situations. But I think we have gotten too critical of a game’s writing because there is only a select few games out there where the writing is excellent. The genre of video games has never necessarily been praised for its storytelling ability.
Replay value is high and is made better with Serpent Emblem searching, the time attack Mercenaries mode, which hasn’t changed since last series entry, or the unique Agent Hunt mode. The new Agent Hunt mode allows you to join another player’s campaign as an enemy and potentially ruin their play-through by gnawing on their entrails as a zombie/mutant. I found this pretty hard to pull off though as the playable enemy characters are hard to control and are slow to attack. But if you get lucky and are patient then it is incredibly satisfying to end someone’s game by chewing their face off as a Blootshot zombie variant. Also the BSAA emblems from Resident Evil 5 are replaced with Serpent emblems hidden throughout the game. The Serpent Emblems, which when broken, unlock files and action figures under the special features menu. These give more incite to the world around you and makes a second play-through worth the effort.
Regardless of its flaws Resident Evil 6 is an incredibly fun game. That will take you on a zombie mutant infested ride that is best shared with a co-op friend. The story and graphics sometimes leave something to be desired but overall the game and mechanics are well polished and fun. If you are expecting a survival horror game I suggest you look somewhere else, but if you want fun action adventure game this is for you.
