NXP Semiconductors’ micro speakers will make your mobile 5x louder

Philips founded outfit NXP Semiconductors has launched micro speakers that will make mobile phone audio five times louder and promises to improve mobile sound quality.

Presently, micro speakers embedded within mobile devices and music players are limited to around 0.5 watts. However, NXP Semiconductors has announced micro speakers that can handle up to 2.6 watts.

According to the company this will make phones and tablets much louder than before – up to 6 decibels – and will offer deeper bass and higher sound quality. The chip will also adapt depending on environment and temperature, which will also help to improve sound quality.

“Digital natives have come of age taking poor mobile sound quality for granted. As speakers have become smaller, the quiet, tinny sound we’ve come to associate with mobile devices has got even worse,” said Shawn Scarlett, director of marketing for the mobile audio product line at NXP Semiconductors.

“Our new audio system transforms the listening experience, enabling louder, richer sound quality from virtually any mobile device. The improvement is so striking that consumers, handset makers and operators will immediately hear the difference.”

NXP Semiconductors said the design of the chip is now finished, with a rollout expected later this year.
