J.J. Abrams is in talks with Valve about Half Life and Portal movies

Two film and gaming heavyweights are meeting to work on a film version of maybe Half Life or maybe Portal.

The two big hitters are writer, director and producer J.J. Abrams, you may know him from LostCloverfield or the Star Trekreboot, and Valve president and co-founder Gabe Newell.

Newell and Abrams took the stage for a special keynote session at the DICE (Design, Innovate, Communicate, Entertain) Summit for videogame executives.

They delivered a keynote entitled “Storytelling Across Platforms: Who Benefits Most, the Audience or the Player?”

It is unlikely that anyone expected that this would just be an interesting chat with two interesting chaps. Film versions of games are not unusual, though the interpretations might be, but they are not usually great either.

Between them Newell and Abrams might be able to spin some magic into one of the two game titles mentioned, both of which have fascinated gamers.

The keynote has not been made available for streaming yet. We have to take other websites’ word for what was actually said, but the collaboration was confirmed in the stream from DICE’s Twitter feed.

As we understand it, Newell delivered the news that the pair are going to try to work together to do something with something. It’s not what you would call a signed off press confirmation with a pair of logo’d socks attached, but it is more or less straight from the horse’s mouth.

Of the two games it is Half Life that seems set to jump off the small screen and onto the larger one. Portal would be a mind-bending and dark challenge, while the first person shooter Half Life is an obvious choice for a popcorn makeover.
