Is This The End of Flash As We Know It?
It would appear that Adobe is finally throwing in the towell regarding flash player develpment for mobile devices and will be concentrating their efforts on HTML5 and other technologies.
Flash has long been a thorn in the side of Apple. Users have wanted Flash support on the iPhone and iPad devices for some time and Apple was not willing to sacrifice platform stability (or open software development). Now, it seems that their bullheadedness has finally paid off.
In an announcement to ZDNet, Adobe has said:
Our future work with Flash on mobile devices will be focused on enabling Flash developers to package native apps with Adobe AIR for all the major app stores. We will no longer adapt Flash Player for mobile devices to new browser, OS version or device configurations. Some of our source code licensees may opt to continue working on and releasing their own implementations. We will continue to support the current Android and PlayBook configurations with critical bug fixes and security updates.
Let’s just hope that Air is up to the job.
