How to turn off/disable Carrier IQ on your iPhone iOS 5

With recent controversy over Carrier IQ, and other tracking concerns incorporated on mobile devices, many feel privacy is at risk. Apple has said they no longer use Carrier IQ software on most iOS 5 mobile devices, though they have not clarified which devices still use the software. To help worried souls we have put together a quick How-To for disabling the feature-like ability on the iPhone iOS 5.

  • Step 1: From your iPhone screen touch the “Settings” icon
  • Step 2: Touch “General
  • Step 2: Touch “About” at the top of the pane
  • Step 3: scroll down to the bottom of the pane and touch “Diagnostics & Usage
  • Step 4: Touch “Don’t Send”, placing a check mark next to the feature

iPhone iOS 5 Carrier IQ - DisableTo view the data that would normally be sent, touch “Diagnostic & Usage Data” on the same window. From here users can view the type of content/data in detail.

Each app crash, messages and other miscellaneous information is logged within this area. In our finding we could not see any text messages being captured, as well personal information. Apple claims it does not capture keystrokes on devices that use the software, which shows true when viewing logs captured on our iPhone.

While I personally have nothing to hide on my end, and we understand some simply do not want anything being logged and filed off, I don’t feel the need for all this information to be sent to who knows where, or what.
