China mobile phone users officially exceed 1 billion

China reported Friday it had broken the barrier of 1 billion mobile phone subscribers at the end of February. January and February its cell phone subscriptions grew 20.7 million, which put them over the one billion mark.

China’s mobile phone market has been rapidly exploding over recent years as handset prices and subscriptions fees drop – along with new technology arriving on the market continually spurring sales.

3G technology in China is used by 144 million of the one billion accounts, nearly double the figure from last April. Figures, however, do not indicate how many mobile phone users there are in China, as companies and individuals may have more than one phone on their subscription.
