Apple’s IOS 5.1.1 gets jailbroken

Chronic-Dev and the Iphone Dev Team have released Absinthe 2.0, a tethered jailbreak for IOS 5.1.1.

Apple’s IOS 5.1.1 was until earlier today able to keep Iphone and Ipad users in Apple’s walled garden, however thanks to the work of the Iphone crackers at Chronic-Dev and the Iphone Dev Team that is no longer the case. The two groups have announced the release of Absinthe 2.0, a tethered jailbreak for IOS 5.1.1.

The groups said, “After copious amounts of work and many sleepless nights Absinthe 2.0 is finally here to jailbreak your device. This release has been a large collaborative effort between Chronic-Dev Team and iPhone Dev Teams (Jailbreak Dream Team). This jailbreak supports firmware 5.1.1 ONLY and is again one of the most easiest jailbreaks to use (so easy your grandma could do it).”

Absinthe 2.0 supports every Apple Ipad with the exception of those running IOS 2.4, Iphones running IOS version 2.1 all the way up to IOS 4.1 and Ipod Touch devices running IOS 3.1 and 4.1. The team said support for IOS 2.4 on Ipads will be coming at a later date.

Apple’s walled garden means that devices running IOS can only install applications through the App Store, a highly controlled environment. By jailbreaking IOS devices, users prevent Apple from controlling what applications can be loaded, with the Cydia application allowing users to browse third-party app stores that allow applications that Apple might have turned down on its own App Store.
