Apple’s A5 iPhone and iPad chip made in Texas
Reuters reports that Apple’s A5 dual-core processor is now made in a 1.6 million square feet factory in Austin, Texas. The massive building, an estimated price tag of $3.6 billion, is owned by Korean electronics giant Samsung Electronics.
While Samsung has been the manufacture behind the A4 and now A5, we didn’t know it was being made right here in the good-old U.S. For years Apple has relied on low-cost Asian manufacturers’ components and construction of its products.
The new $3.6 billion non-memory chip production facility achieved full production in December. Most of the buildings capacity is dedicated to the A5 production, according to Reuters’ sources.
Apple’s A5 processor, 1Ghz dual-core, is twice as power than its previous A4 processor. GPU performance is 7 times more powerful and contains 512MB of low-power DDR2 RAM clocked in at 533Mhz.
