AMD G series APUs support Windows Embedded Compact 7 Real-time Operating System

AMD has announced that its G series Fusion accelerated processor units (APUs) now support Microsoft’s Windows Embedded Compact 7 operating system.

AMD’s G series embedded APUs are the firm’s effort to get into the high-volume embedded chip market by offering signficantly better GPU power than anything Intel and its Atom processor can offer. Now AMD has announced that its G series chips support Microsoft’s Embedded Compact 7, an operating system that is pitched towards medical, retail and industrial automation systems.

Buddy Broeker, director of AMD Embedded Solutions said, “AMD is committed to providing our customers with the broadest possible range of operating system support to help them bring devices to market quickly and cost effectively. Seamless support for Windows Embedded Compact 7 helps ensure that AMD embedded G-Series customers are equipped to take full advantage of the many benefits afforded via the combination of these leading technologies.”

While the thought of Microsoft Windows running on medical devices might send your heart into cardiac arrest, for AMD it could be onto a winner, as Windows is popular in retail and industrial systems, while digital signage systems make heavy use of Windows. According to Microsoft, its Windows Embedded Compact 7 operating system will include Silverlight, a customised Internet Explorer web browser and support for Adobe’s Flash 10.1.

AMD said Kontron’s MSM-eO/-N PC/104-Plus SBC motherboards and Axiomtek’s CAPA111 3.5in SBC motherboard support Windows Embedded Compact 7.
